Lær sjamanisme med Sjamanforbundet – Forfedre og forfedrekontakt

In the quiet dusk of an autumn forest you stand by an altar of stones and twigs, while the smoke from a small fire rises upward towards the sky. You feel a warm current in your chest – not only your own breath, but the echo of breath from those who came before you. Your ancestors, invisible threads in the fabric of life, whisper through the leaves and the wind. In shamanism, ancestral contact is not merely memories of the past; it is a living bridge to the lower world (in some traditions the middle world), where the wisdom of the dead meets the path of the living. Honouring forebears in sacred space connects you to the directions – north for the roots of the earth, east for the messages of the air, south for the warm memories of fire, west for the emotional flow of water. This contact gives strength, healing and guidance, universal in shamanic traditions.

The ancestors are not distant shadows; they are allies who dwell in the sacred space you create, ready to guide you through the circle of life.

A Journey to the World of the Ancestors

You enter the sacred space, marked by the directions. In the north, the portal of earth, you sink down into soft soil – the roots of your forebears grip around you, drawing you down into the lower world. An elderly figure appears, her face wrinkled like old bark, her eyes full of stories. "I am your grandmother in spirit," she says. "Stand firm on our shoulders." She shows you images of weathered storms, teaching patience and heritage.

In the east the wind blows in messages from the east, the air carrying voices like birdsong. A young forebear runs forward, his laughter fresh as a morning breeze. "See the perspective," he whispers. "We sent signs – dreams, coincidences. Listen now." You see your life from above, woven into their web, and clarity settles over you.

From the south the warmth of fire flares – a warrior forebear stands there, the flame dancing in his eyes. "Transform our heritage," he says. "Burn away trauma, ignite your power." Warmth flows through you, the ash of old wounds becoming new earth.

In the west, in the depths of water, you meet a mother figure, the river of her eyes mirroring sorrow and joy. "Flow with our feelings," she sings. "Cleanse, heal, remember." Water washes you clean, binding generations in emotional flow.

Finally they gather at the centre, the heart of the middle world. They sing a song of unity: "We are in you, you are in us." You return, but the thread is tied – your ancestors are now with you in every breath.

What Ancestral Contact Means

In shamanism the ancestors represent continuity and wisdom from the middle world, where they live on in the cycle of nature. Linked to the directions, they give balance: the north of earth gives roots, the east of air insight, the south of fire transformation, the west of water healing. Honouring them in sacred space strengthens personal power, resolves inherited trauma and opens for guidance. It is a universal practice that builds on the altar, the elements and ceremonial etiquette.

Practical Exercises with the Ancestors

These exercises are progressive, 10–25 minutes each. Use the sacred space from earlier articles, take notes in a journal. Start outdoors at sunset for strength.

Exercise 1: Roots to the North – The Forebears of Earth (10–15 min)

Time: 10–15 minutes

Tools: A stone or earth from nature, sacred space.

Call the north: "Earth in the north, open for the roots of the ancestors."

Sit barefoot, hold the stone. Visualise roots going down to a forefather or foremother in the lower world.

Ask: "What is my heritage of strength?" Feel images and feelings rise up.

Place the stone on the altar, give thanks: "Thank you for the foundation."

Ground yourself with three breaths.

What do you open for? Strength and identity from the bloodline.

Exercise 2: The Wind of the East – The Messages of Air (15 min)

Time: 15 minutes

Tools: A feather or leaf, face the east.

Call the east: "Air in the east, bring the wisdom of the ancestors."

Breathe in the wind, visualise a messenger from the lower world – a voice, a sign.

Ask: "What do I need to see?" Listen to your thoughts or sounds.

Place the feather on the altar, give thanks: "Thank you for the clarity."

Breathe deeply out.

What do you open for? Guidance in choices and perspective.

Exercise 3: The Flame of the South – The Heritage of Fire (15–20 min)

Time: 15–20 minutes

Tools: A small candle, face the south.

Call the south: "Fire in the south, transform the gifts of the ancestors."

Light the candle, gaze into it. See a forebear in the flame, burn away trauma.

Ask: "What is to be renewed?" Feel the warmth fill you.

Extinguish consciously, give thanks: "Thank you for the power."

Hold the warmth in your heart.

What do you open for? Healing of generational trauma.

Exercise 4: The Water of the West – The Bridge of Feeling (15 min)

Time: 15 minutes

Tools: A bowl of water, face the west.

Call the west: "Water in the west, cleanse the bonds of the ancestors."

Pour the water, visualise a river to your forebears in the lower world.

Ask: "Which feelings are we healing?" Let tears or calm flow.

Pour the water onto the earth, give thanks: "Thank you for the flow."

Cleanse your face.

What do you open for? Emotional release and connection.

Exercise 5: Central Integration – The Full Circle (20–25 min)

Time: 20–25 minutes

Tools: An altar with objects for the directions.

Call all the directions, journey to the centre of the middle world.

Invite the ancestors: "Come, guide me." See them in a circle.

Ask: "What is our common path?" Receive a message.

Give thanks collectively, ground yourself. Lay an offering (flowers, water).

Take notes and integrate it into your day.

What do you open for? Holistic support from your forebears.

The Way Forward with the Ancestors

Build further with dream awakening or seasonal rituals – honour them yearly. Respect is the key: offer before you ask. This practice strengthens your sacred space and binds you to the lower world.
