The Rune Fehu
Then I had to get to know the rune Fehu. I learned that Fehu meant "cattle-livestock-herd." Yesterday's wealth, you might say. Today most people do not care much about counting their wealth in numbers of cows, at least not most of us. Today we have values like net annual income, gold, a cabin and cars … you know. My wealth lies in books and in my near and dear ones, including my animals. We all have a different measure for when we feel wealthy, but that part of Fehu I understand well.
Career probably falls under Fehu too. I have seen many examples of that during the time I have worked with runes, reading others and myself. Career keeps coming up when Fehu pokes its head out.
Values we create. Fehu promises us nothing for free, like a windfall, a gift or an inheritance. The fact is that we value more what we have earned ourselves than what comes free. Most of us, at any rate.
If we do not take care of our values, we risk Fehu poking its head out, but in the upside-down position, warning us. But the fact is, we can enter an unfortunate phase. The state of the world economy may be against us, other unlucky factors come into play – yes, life simply turns sour. We often choose to fight against the current, but perhaps sometimes, for the sake of our health, it is wiser to bend a little in the storm? You will have to judge that for yourself if the bad weather should strike you.
I know several people who write Fehu on a bay leaf and carry it in their wallet if they need a little extra help with their finances.
Among the zodiac signs, I perceive Fehu as Capricorn, and I believe we can learn something from the sign of Capricorn and from Fehu when it comes to finances and to preserving created values.
Thursdays and Jupiter are also good. Thursdays carry a lot of drive within them, and Jupiter brings "luck" along – now, it is not always random who has luck, but … that will have to be another discussion. 🙂 I often write the symbol for Jupiter and Fehu on a bay leaf, and do so on a Thursday, as close as possible to the full moon and during the waxing moon, when I wish for something deeply. So far it has worked. Well, I have never wished for any great things, but for things like a book that has been hard to get hold of, as well as a journey and a sign of life from a dear friend.
Frøy and Frøya belong to the Vanir. Vanaheim is a world of its own in Norse cosmology. It is said that Frøy is king over the elves. For those of us who are fond of or curious about the elves, it might be good to carry this rune, I would think.
I have never seen an elf, and thank goodness for that, but I sat out in the forest and asked aloud whether I could be shown some proof that the elves were real. That day nothing happened, but the next day I saw three "fairy rings" in different places during my walk in the forest. So, I believe the elves are real and that I received an answer – but I am a little afraid of them, so it is fine that they stay in their world and I in mine 🙂
Gold is Fehu's metal. It is said that Frøya loves gold and that she weeps tears of gold. Gold is wealth, of course, but one must beware of greed. There are many stories of greed combined with gold!
It is so well written in the Bible: "What does it profit a man to gain the whole world if he loses his soul?" And there is something to those words. Now, I am not a diligent Bible reader, but I am not blind to the fact that the book contains much wisdom.
Among crystals, Irene Resaland, who is my right-hand crystal expert and mentor in this field, thinks Fehu's crystal is Labradorite. I throw in green aventurine on my own account. Labradorite strengthens intuition, and intuition/instinct is important to have along in the "world of values."
And in the end one must remember what the real, true and lasting values actually are.
Green aventurine attracts luck and new opportunities. It also brings strength and self-confidence – fine qualities when you need to believe in yourself and believe that you will succeed. Be realistic, but believe in yourself, says this crystal.
Well, then I hop over to the plant world.
These are the herbs I find to be most in harmony with Fehu:
Alfalfa – it is rich in both vitamin C and vitamin K, and it contains many good minerals, such as calcium, potassium, iron and copper. We ought to eat more alfalfa!
But for you with lupus, or you who take blood-thinning medication, alfalfa is not recommended.
Alfalfa is often combined with other "remedies" and placed in jars to attract money, stable finances, growth and prosperity.
Just remember that all the alfalfa in the world will not help you if you do not help yourself. 🙂
Allspice, which in Norwegian we often call Allehånde.
Allspice promotes growth and stability. Many use it together with green candles to get a business or project they are working on moving. Some make themselves a "prosperity pouch" with, among other things, allspice, a banknote or a coin and the rune Fehu, which they carry with them.
In medicinal use it is said that allspice in a foot bath kills both nail fungus and athlete's foot. Otherwise, a cup of tea made with allspice is a good remedy for mild headaches. This is also said to be a very good remedy if you struggle with diarrhea. An acquaintance said that allspice helped her through menopause – and I believe her. She is a naturopath and knows what she is talking about.
Tormentil
This is an herb that is little talked about, but it deserves to be shown off and put to use.
People who fish should bring a little tormentil along on their fishing trips, because it creates fishing luck. So, tight lines!
Some use it in the wash water and clean their premises with it. Tormentil can prevent bankruptcy and times of decline. Tormentil does not create abundance, but it is a good stabilizer for the economy.
Just remember to harvest it around midnight during the waxing moon. That is when it is most potent.
If you have digestive problems, a cup of tea brewed from tormentil is a good medicine.
If you are troubled by sores in the mouth or other problems in the oral cavity, make yourself a mouthwash with tormentil!
I was given a tormentil oil to take with me to Africa in case of sunburn. As it happened I did not get sunburned, but the woman I traveled with was unlucky and got rather burned. She said the tormentil oil soothed and was good to have.
A dream pillow with tormentil and mugwort is good to have under your pillow if you want to dream true dreams. These two together are also good to have as incense.
I have also discovered that cedar is excellent together with Fehu.
Cedar promotes growth and coaxes out strength where you do not think there is any strength left. The incense cleanses the aura and makes us think anew. If you want contact with spirits and ancestors, an incense of rosemary and cedar is phenomenal.
We all, in our foundation, have pride and strength – let no one take this from you. Unfortunately it sometimes happens that we make choices at the expense of our pride, and then our strength shrinks. Sometimes we are subjected to "psychological abuse" that makes us shrink in the soul. Sadly there are plenty of poison bombs and everyday scumbags out there in the world. It is easy to run into such individuals. Get away as fast as you can, seek help and find your way back to yourself. To who you really are! Back to who you were!
A little bark from the cedar tree together with alfalfa is a fine combination for drawing out inner strength and peace of soul. This can be used as incense. I grind it well together before placing the mix in the incense burner.
If you take a couple of tablespoons of salt, mix in a little cedar, tormentil and a rusty nail – (iron protects) and place this in a small pouch that you hang inside the front door, then you have a fine protection against gossip and malice. Feel free to write the rune Fehu on the pouch.
If you want a good oil for massage, you can mix a couple of drops of cedar essence with a base oil of your choice. Rub this around your wrists or on the back of your neck.
If you are troubled by bad dreams or "night terrors," a few drops of cedar oil can be dripped onto a cotton ball and placed on the nightstand. This can truly give you a restful night.
If you are troubled by poor self-confidence, draw Fehu on your forehead with a little cedar oil and imagine yourself growing stronger in the belief in yourself.
Well, this was what I had about the rune Fehu for this time.
Then I continue with Uruz, which is also an exciting rune.
