Getting to know the runes

Now I am addressing first and foremost those who have no experience with the runes, or who have only a little experience with these "treasures" – so may you experienced ones be a bit patient with me.

The word Futhark comes from the first six runes in this alphabet. Fehu – F, Uruz – U, Thurs – Th, Ass – A, Raido – R and Ken – K.

The runes are divided into groups of eight, with three main ætter – named after the rune that opens each ætt.

The first ætt is Frøy/Frøya's ætt and begins with the rune Fehu.

The second ætt is Hagal's ætt and begins with the rune Hagal.

The third ætt is Týr's ætt and begins with the rune Tiwaz.

You will quickly notice that there are many different spellings when it comes to the runes, but the differences are no greater than that you will easily recognize the runes. For example Thurs, Thurisaz, which is what I call the Thurs rune – and so on.

Frøy/Frøya's ætt is the creative ætt; it stands for our instincts and our basic survival strategy.

Hagal's ætt is the "tough" one; it gives us obstacles and lessons to learn.

Týr's ætt speaks of community, our spirituality and our virtues.

You will see this more clearly as we go through all the runes.

You can also make runes of metal, bone or stone. I chose wood because it felt more right for me, but you must feel your way to what feels right for you.

I regard the runes as a very good channel for gods and humans to communicate through. We have several channels, but I greatly appreciate "Radio Rune," and I find the runes have so many uses that I cannot thank Heimdal enough for this gift. Shame on you, Odin – but thank you for bringing the runes into the light /\

As I go through the runes, we will look at herbs that resonate well with the runes.

If the runes are treasures given from above, then the herbs are the treasures of the earth.

Herbs can heal us and they can harm us. We must always remember the shadow side of the herbs, and when we remember it, we begin to relate to the herbs with the respect they deserve.

We will also look at crystals and at Tarot, as well as planets and zodiac signs.

Take in what you feel resonates with you and set aside what you feel does not resonate so well. As I said, I do not hold any definitive answer – but I do hold my experience, and that is what I want to share with you.

I take the runes one at a time. I pair each rune with herbs, plants and information that I myself find fitting for the rune.

So there will be 24 posts about the various runes – I hope you can find something useful here 🙂

So we begin with the rune Fehu, which is the first of the runes.

Greetings, Anita
