A Moose Moon Ceremony You Can Do at Home

Elgmåneseremoni du kan gjøre hjemme

Not all of our members have the opportunity to take part in our public ceremonies, but it is entirely possible to carry out a simple and meaningful ceremony at home. Here you will find a simplified version that can be performed alone, either indoors or outdoors, so that you can still connect with the community, the intentions and the power of the ceremony – wherever you are.

Below you will find two simple variants of the ceremony: one for indoor use and one for outdoors. Both can be carried out alone and require no prior knowledge.

Indoor ceremony

Preparations:

Find a quiet place where you will not be disturbed.

Tidy the area and light a candle (symbolizing the sacred fire).

Set out three small pieces of food (e.g. dried fruit, nuts or bread) to symbolize the moose's heart.

The course of the ceremony

Welcome and intention: Sit down, close your eyes and feel your intention: power, awakening, wisdom.

Cleansing: Breathe deeply in and out a few times. Imagine that you are letting go of stress and unease.

Opening the sacred space: Say aloud or within yourself: "This space is now a sacred place for my ceremony."

Drumming/sound: Tap lightly on a drum, a tabletop, or use an app with a drum sound for 1–2 minutes.

Symbolic act:

Hold the three pieces of food in your hands.

Think of three worlds: the past (ancestors), the present (yourself), the future (descendants/visions).

Say a short prayer or thanks for each piece.

Place one piece by the light (an offering to the fire), one on a plate (an offering to the spirits), and eat the last one (to receive power).

Movement: Stretch your arms upward, turn slowly around and look about you to "gain an overview."

Closing: Give thanks for the experience, blow out the candle and say: "The ceremony is concluded."

Outdoor ceremony

Preparations:

Find a safe place outdoors, preferably in nature.

Clear a small area and make a little stone circle or use a fire (if it is permitted and safe).

Bring three small pieces of food (e.g. dried meat, fruit or nuts).

The course of the ceremony

Welcome and intention: Sit down, feel the nature around you and formulate your intention.

Cleansing: Breathe deeply, shake your body lightly to "shake off" the thoughts of everyday life.

Opening the space: Say: "This place is now a sacred space for my ceremony."

Drumming/sound: Strike a drum, a stone or a tree trunk, or clap your hands calmly.

Symbolic act:

Hold the three pieces of food in your hands.

Think of three worlds: the underworld (roots/ancestors), this world (yourself), the upper world (visions/spirit).

Say a word of thanks for each piece.

Place one piece in the fire or on the ground (an offering to the fire), one beneath a stone or in the grass (an offering to the spirits), and eat the last one.

Movement: Rise, stretch your arms toward the sky, turn slowly around and look about you.

Closing: Give thanks to nature, say: "The ceremony is concluded."

Tips for both versions

Use what you have at hand – the most important thing is your intention.

Be open to what happens, and follow your own rhythm.

After the ceremony you may take time to write down thoughts or feelings, or simply enjoy a quiet moment.
